PFALZKOM stands up for climate-neutral Data Centers

For many years now, sustainability has been one of the key issues for the future and an essential aspect in the provision of services for the Data Center operator PFALZKOM.

Commitment to the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact

Sustainability – For many years now this has been one of the central topics for the future for the Ludwigshafen-based Data Center operator PFALZKOM, and a key aspect in the provision of services in the areas of Data Centers, network & connectivity and managed services. The company joined the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact in 2021. The pan-European association actively supports the goals of the EU Green Deal, which aims to make Europe the world’s first climate-neutral continent by 2050. Data Centers play a key role in this. Members undertake to operate their Data Centers in a climate-neutral manner by 2030 having taken appropriate measures. The initiative is in regular contact with the European Commission.

Initiative sets itself high climate targets
For Technical Managing Director Jürgen Beyer, participation in the initiative is an important step that seamlessly continues the previous commitment: “Climate neutrality and sustainability are topics that are very important to our Data Centers As part of the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact, we are therefore delighted to be focusing even more strongly on the sustainable operation of Data Centers. With the pact, PFALZKOM is taking the next step towards a sustainable future. And we already offer our business partners climate-friendly and energy-efficient Data Center operations – complemented by TÜV-certified high availability, security and data protection compliance.

The Climate Neutral Data Center Pact has several goals. The signatories have voluntarily committed to operating their Data Centers with clean energy and achieving certain energy efficiency values by 2030 at the latest. Two criteria that the company already fulfills today: PFALZKOM’s Data Centers have been operated exclusively with 100% green electricity from the parent company PFALZWERKE’s own supply network for years.

The industry-specific parameter for energy efficiency in Data Centers, the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE), is also used as a metric. The initiative has set a PUE target value: Existing Data Centers should achieve a PUE of 1.3 by 2030. PFALZKOM’s Rhine-Neckar II Data Center has been achieving this value for some time, while DCRN I is already on the home straight with a PUE <1.4.

Pioneer in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region
PFALZKOM is the first signatory from the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region to take on a pioneering role. “The initiative brings together big players such as the hyperscalers from Frankfurt, regional providers such as our partner Data Center EMC – Home of Data from Munich and us in our joint quest for climate neutrality. We want to set a good example in our strong Rhine-Neckar economic region so that we can achieve the greatest possible effect – for our customers, partners and our planet, ” adds Uwe Burre, Commercial Director of PFALZKOM.

The goals of the Climate Neutral Data Center Pact
The signatories to the pact have made a voluntary commitment to five specific requirement criteria that are to be achieved by 2030 at the latest. These relate to a measurable, high energy efficiency standard for Data Center operations, power supply through the purchase of clean energy, ambitious water saving targets, the reuse, repair and recycling of servers, electrical equipment and other associated electrical components, as well as the investigation and subsequent implementation of practical, environmentally friendly and cost-efficient exhaust air utilization.
