Everything You Need to Know About Modern Data Centers

What are the benefits of colocation? What security standards are relevant today? And what should companies look for when choosing a Data Center? Here you’ll find the most important answers at a glance.

What are the advantages of a Data Center over having your own server room?

Professional Data Centers provide the conditions necessary to operate business-critical IT in a physically secure, cost-effective, scalable, and energy-efficient manner. Companies benefit from an infrastructure that is already highly available without having to invest in power supply, cooling, access control, or fault tolerance themselves. This reduces operating costs, increases IT resilience, and helps address the shortage of skilled workers.

How do Data Centers support digitalization, cloud services, and modern applications?

Data Centers form the technical foundation for digital business models, hybrid cloud architectures, and data-intensive applications. They provide scalable computing power, storage, and network capacity, enabling companies to flexibly deploy and further develop modern IT services.

What security and availability standards should a Data Center for businesses meet?

A professional Data Center should have redundant power and cooling systems, physical access controls, early fire detection, network redundancies, and documented security and operational processes. Certifications and regular audits are now essential components of professional Data Center operations. Similarly, Data Centers should already be taking into account energy efficiency and sustainability requirements, as these are increasingly mandated by current provisions of the Energy Act.

What role do latency and network connectivity play for applications in the Data Center?

Latency and network connectivity have a significant impact on the performance of digital applications. Fast, stable, and high-performance connections are crucial for smooth operation, particularly for real-time processes, cross-location collaboration, cloud connections, and data-intensive workloads.

Do modern Data Centers meet KRITIS and other compliance requirements?

Modern Data Centers can help companies meet high standards for security, data protection, availability, and regulatory compliance. Relevant standards and certifications include ISO/IEC 27001 for information security, DIN EN 50600 for Data Centers, ISO 50001 for energy management, as well as audited control and operational processes. PFALZKOM holds certifications including ISO/IEC 27001:2022, DIN EN 50600, ISO 50001, ISO 9001, and ISAE 3402 SOC 1.

KRITIS refers to critical infrastructure whose failure could have a significant impact on the security of supply or the public. Whether specific KRITIS, DORA, or other compliance requirements must be met always depends on the individual company, the regulatory framework, the industry, and the specific use case.

What energy efficiency and sustainability standards generally apply to Data Centers?

Industrial Data Centers aim for PUE values below 1.3. With green electricity and waste heat recovery, sustainable operation is possible even at high loads of up to 10 MW. Standards such as DIN EN 50600 and ISO 27001 integrate efficiency into redundancy concepts for continuous production data processing. This reduces operating costs even during 24/7 operation.

What additional services do Data Centers offer besides technical infrastructure?

In addition to secure space, power supply, cooling, and connectivity, professional Data Centers offer complementary services that ease the burden on companies during day-to-day operations. These include, among other things, remote hands or maintenance services, installation services, receipt and storage of deliveries, escorted access, and support with external audits or certifications. Dedicated on-site contacts also ensure that companies receive not only technical infrastructure but also operational support for their systems.

How can quality, security, and compliance be demonstrated for Data Center and IT services?

Certifications, audits, and independent assessments provide transparency regarding quality, security, availability, and operational processes. Standards such as ISO/IEC 27001, DIN EN 50600, ISO 50001, and ISO 9001 help companies assess their compliance with defined requirements in a verifiable manner. In addition, regulatory frameworks such as DORA, as well as external market analyses and industry assessments, provide further guidance in selecting suitable IT and Data Center service providers.
