What is Gaia-X?Gaia-X is a European initiative for a federated, secure data infrastructure based on open standards, common interfaces, and European values, with the aim of strengthening digital sovereignty. Gaia-X was launched in 2019 by Germany and France. The initiative is organized by the Gaia-X European Association for Data and Cloud AISBL, a nonprofit association under Belgian law based in Brussels. The goal is to establish interconnected data spaces where data can be shared in an interoperable, transparent, and GDPR-compliant manner. The focus is on creating a trustworthy data ecosystem for secure data exchange in Europe and beyond. More than 20 national Gaia-X hubs, including the Gaia-X Hub Germany—of which PFALZKOM is a member—support companies, research institutions, and public organizations in putting Gaia-X’s concepts and areas of application into practice.
What role do Data Centers play in the Gaia-X ecosystem?Data centers form the physical foundation for the operation of data rooms, cloud services, and digital platforms within the Gaia-X ecosystem. They ensure that data can be stored, processed, and made reliably available. Gaia-X takes a federated approach: rather than centralizing data and services in a single infrastructure, they are delivered across multiple distributed and interconnected environments. This supports availability, scalability, and digital sovereignty. Data centers provide the necessary infrastructure for this, including secure data storage, high-performance connectivity, and the integration of cloud, edge, and data room services. This is particularly relevant for regional edge cloud models and OpenStack-based cloud environments, as well as for the implementation of Gaia-X federation services and digital clearing houses.
What does data sovereignty mean in the context of Gaia-X?Data sovereignty in Gaia-X ensures that companies retain full control over their data, independent of U.S. hyperscalers, through standardized contracts and identity management (IAM/SSI). It prevents vendor lock-in through open interfaces and enables secure data exchange in data rooms. This strengthens competitiveness while complying with GDPR and BSI standards. As a result, Gaia-X becomes the foundation for a cloud without hyperscalers and for sovereign cloud providers in Europe.
How does data exchange work in the Gaia-X ecosystem?Data is exchanged via data spaces, where organizations can share data with one another in a controlled, traceable, and rule-based manner. This involves the use of technical components such as connectors that link different data sources, systems, and organizations. In addition to the Eclipse Dataspace Connector (EDC), other connector solutions are available.
Gaia-X does not define the data space itself, but rather establishes a common trust framework for secure and interoperable data exchange. This includes uniform rules for identities, access rights, transparency, compliance, and traceability. On this basis, companies can exchange data independently while retaining control over its use.
What standards does Gaia-X define for data centers?Gaia-X requires standards such as ISO 27001, DIN EN 50600, and BSI Basic Protection for data centers, supplemented by GXFS for federation (e.g., identity and compliance). The principles of compliance-by-design include transparency, portability, and interoperability, with open-source components for regulatory compliance. Certification is provided by independent clearing houses such as PFALZKOM (GXDCH).
What benefits does Gaia-X offer small and medium-sized businesses?Gaia-X enables small and medium-sized enterprises to adopt cloud computing without vendor lock-in, with cost-effective scalability, local partners, and funding (e.g., €200 million from the BMWK since 2021). It reduces risks associated with vendor lock-in and promotes innovation in data ecosystems. Thanks to regional data centers – such as those in the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region, among others – SMEs benefit from low latency.
How is Gaia-X being implemented in Germany?In Germany, the Gaia-X Hub coordinates use cases, domains, and funded projects, with support from the Gaia-X Association in Brussels. Since 2022, flagship projects have been underway with 11 funded applications. The first competition concluded in 2025, and practical Industry 4.0 use cases are also emerging within the Gaia-X Industry 4.0 ecosystem. Data centers are integrating themselves as GXFS providers. With regard to Gaia-X and Industry 4.0, partner networks such as the Smart Factory Kaiserslautern play an important role. This is because interoperable industrial applications and data spaces are tested there in a real-world setting.
