Data Centers and the Energy Efficiency Act

Data Centers are a central component of digitalization. That is why we at PFALZKOM have long paid attention to energy efficiency far beyond legal requirements.

Data Centers are a central component of digitalization. However, it is often unclear why Data Centers in particular are subject to special reporting obligations under the Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG). In discussions with other experts, it quickly becomes clear that – the fact that Data Centers are explicitly highlighted again in the Energy Efficiency Act and subject to additional obligations – ties up a lot of resources in practice. The challenge is to combine legal requirements and technical developments in a meaningful way – this requires know-how, time and forward-looking planning.

At PFALZKOM, we have long paid attention to energy efficiency and sustainable technologies that go far beyond the legal requirements – entirely in the interests of our customers. A typical misunderstanding we encounter during guided tours concerns the number of computers: “Why are there actually so many of them at PFALZKOM?”

Peter Wehrle, Head of Operations Network and Data Center, puts it in a nutshell for Datacenter Insider: “This is not our IT, but the IT of our customers, which can be housed much more energy-efficiently and securely here in our specially optimized Data Center.” Important to know: The hardware in our Data Centers is largely not operated by PFALZKOM itself. Rather, it forms the core of our services and Managed Services offerings. We provide companies with the infrastructure so that their IT systems can be operated in a state-of-the-art, secure and energy-efficient environment.

By pooling the IT resources of numerous customers, we create efficient and resilient structures. These are significantly more resource-efficient than many individual, isolated server locations. We have also been using 100% green electricity since 2017 and have already saved more than 26,500 tons of CO₂. Our Data Centers are therefore not an end in themselves, but a significant contribution to digitalization, independence and the sustainable strengthening of Germany as a business location.
