The technology behind it – how does 400G work?

To achieve such a massive increase in transmission capacity, we are relying on two key technological innovations. Think of our fiber optic network as a highway for data.

  • A broader frequency spectrum: We are essentially widening the data highway. By using a larger frequency spectrum of light (up to 120 GHz per channel), we can create wide-ranging “lanes” for data transport and significantly increase capacity utilization.
  • More efficient modulation: At the same time, we ensure that each individual “vehicle” on this highway transports more cargo. Using advanced modulation techniques such as 16QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation), we can “pack” significantly more data bits into a single light wave than before. This requires extremely clean and precise signals, a quality that our high-quality fiber optic network guarantees.

The perfect interplay between these two methods allows us to fully exploit the potential of current electronics and achieve a data throughput of 400 Gbit/s per wavelength.
