Wild bee hotels: PFALZKOM promotes the protection of insects

Sustainability is close to PFALZKOM’s core. Last week, an XXL wild bee hotel was set up at both of our data center locations in Mutterstadt to preserve regional biodiversity. “This project is an important contribution to the protection of our native wild bees and a sign of our commitment to nature conservation and biodiversity” explains Dr. Kerstin Tränkle-Jung, Sustainability Manager at PFALZKOM.
Wild bees are indispensable pollinators for many plant species. The two new XXL hotels are designed to help these useful insects: Placed in a sunny location, they offer the wild bees a safe shelter for overwintering and suitable nesting opportunities for future generations. Such nesting aids are important, as many wild bee species are now dependent on them due to the loss of natural areas and nesting sites.

The bee hotels are made of durable wood and are equipped with various nesting materials such as reed tubes, hardwood blocks with holes in different sizes and clay to meet the different needs of wild bee species. The large bee houses were made in the region, more precisely in Schifferstadt – in the workshops for people with mental and multiple disabilities of Ökumenisches Gemeinschaftswerk Pfalz GmbH – and are therefore also socially sustainable. The Ökumenisches Gemeinschaftswerk was also responsible for setting up the beehives on the green spaces. We are looking forward to a lot of buzzing and humming around our data centers.
